Hurricane season kicks off in June. Here in Central Florida, Register Construction knows the importance of being prepared. After all, hurricane season is only once a year, but safety and vigilance are important year-round.

With the unpredictable nature of these storms, you need to make sure your company’s site and building are storm-ready. Florida is no stranger to hurricanes, but a prepared, safeguarded building can save stress, minimize damage, and ensure the safety of your employees.

Below are some tips to keep in mind.

Conduct a Building Assessment

First things first: Conduct a comprehensive assessment of your building, making sure to pay special attention to:

  • Roof Strength: Is your roof in good condition? Any loose shingles or tiles should be repaired and secured.
  • Windows and Doors: Make sure all windows and doors are properly sealed and can withstand high winds.
  • Flood Zones: Identify whether your building is in a flood-prone area and take necessary precautions to prevent water damage.

Secure and Reinforce

Once you’ve assessed your building, it’s time to secure and reinforce it.

First, consider installing storm shutters to give your windows an extra layer of protection. You’ll also want to make sure any outdoor furniture, signs, and other loose items are either brought inside or securely fastened.

Finally, reinforce any entry points to keep everyone safe. Strengthen doors and windows with additional locks or braces.

Don’t forget that having an emergency plan in place is just as important as securing your building. Make sure you have:

  • Emergency Kits: Stock up on essentials like water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, and batteries.
  • Communication Plan: Ensure you have a way to communicate with your team, whether through a phone tree or a group messaging app.
  • Evacuation Routes: Know the safest routes for evacuation and make sure your employees are aware of them, too.
