Living and working in Central Florida comes with certain risks, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors like we do at Register Construction. Working on commercial construction projects means that our skilled workers are regularly exposed to significant risk from the heat of the Florida sun. Register Construction is committed to worker safety, so we strive to keep all our employees safe all through the year.

Heat Safety Working in Florida

Working in construction is fraught with dangers, so at Register Construction we take our commitment to safety seriously. Summers in Florida present unique challenges, and one of the most serious is the smothering heat of the subtropical climate.

Heat exhaustion and sunburns are major health risks. We encourage our workers to look out for one another and keep an eye out for teammates who may need help. Anyone experiencing headaches, nausea, or the feeling of being cold in the heat needs immediate attention. They need to get into some shade and be given cold water while medical assistance is summoned.

Our workers dress for the weather in lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. A light bandana is often used to cover the neck, and sunglasses are worn to protect the eyes. Severe sunburn can easily become a medical emergency if symptoms such as nausea, disorientation, or inflamed skin are present.

In addition to those safeguards, we also:

  • Make sure a source of safe, cool drinking water is available;
  • Make sure workers are able to take frequent breaks; and
  • Train our workers to identify signs of heat stress.

The project managers at Register Construction do their best to schedule our work outside of the sweltering midday and afternoon heat. When it is necessary to work during these uncomfortable hours, we make sure that everyone is taking breaks as appropriate and has access to plenty of cool drinking water.
